The determinants of health influence the health of individuals and populations. Healthy people 2020 describes these factors and identifies the five determinants. The determinant health services address access to health care services. The importance of health services provides health care allowing for a healthy individual. “Lack of access, or limited access, to health services greatly impacts an individual’s health status” (healthypeople.gov). Personal, social, economic, and environmental factors can affect and defer health care for individuals. Individual’s with lack of care availability, high health care cost, no health insurance, or a language barrier leads to not receiving health care, not receiving proper care, no preventative medical care, and preventable hospital care.

The public health wheel was developed “to describe the breadth and scope of public health nursing practice” (Nies, & McEwen, p. 14, 2019). The wheel identifies 17 public health interventions which are directed at improving population health. A community health nurse (CHN) could use screening to address the determinant health access. “Health professionals administer preventive screenings and services to assess and reduce your risk for disease and conditions” (McGill, N. Feb., 2014). Preventative screening by CHN charts a course for better health care and possible avoid diseases. You can check with a health care provider about availability screening and what is right for you. Preventative screenings can be geared specifically for men, women, and children. Screenings are also specific to races, cultures, living areas. Preventative screening by a CHN aims to see many people receiving services that are important to health, and in the long run are cost effective prevent paying for treatments.
