Task

Write a short story. Use the materials in the course text, the course module commentary, examples from your reading, and weekly discussions to think your way through your story from initial idea to final draft.

Considerations

Fiction is storytelling, something you have been close to your whole life: your family and friends tell stories, you read books, you watch movies. Stories are all around us. Writing fiction is the process of making stories come to life.

Coming up with an idea is just the first step. Your work will be evaluated on the degree to which you incorporate the lessons from the text and the course modules. Your task is not to be a perfect writer, but to demonstrate growth as you apply course concepts to your writing.

Genre

Literary fiction, the type of work we’re creating in this class, likes to consider itself separate from genre fiction – fantasy, horror, science fiction, mystery, thriller, etc. I think this is a bogus distinction. Popular genre fiction comes from literary fiction – think of Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein or Bram Stoker’s Dracula as early examples of modern horror. The main difference is that Twilight and True Blood take the vampire as a given and build upon the mythologies create in the earlier works. In this instance, it’s not an issue of topic but an issue of borrowing too much.

If you want to write in a genre, your task is to make it yours and to be original. If you feel driven to write about elves but all you can think of is Tolkien, then you’re writing fan fiction – and that’s outside the realms of this course. If you want to write in a genre and have concerns, discuss it with me early.

Format requirements

  • Clean copy, proofread, MLA manuscript format, etc.
  • Around 5-8 pages or 1500-2500 words. You have a lot of leeway here; I’m looking for a complete story not number.
  • Double spaced
  • Pages numbered at bottom of page (use your word processor’s page number feature – do not type them in yourself; ask me if you are unsure how to do this.)
  • 12-point standard font such as Times Roman
