In this Reaction Paper #1 I want you to reflect on how much of our human characteristics come from “nature” (heredity/biology) versus how much from “nurture” (the social environment)?
As we have seen and discussed in class, observations of isolated, institutionalized, and feral children help us to answer the nature – nurture question. When we look at extreme cases of children who have been isolated usually through extreme neglect and abuse we see that they do not develop normally. One such example is the case of Genie that we discussed in class. Genie was socially isolated until she was 13 years old. She could not walk or talk. Genie was the forbidden “experiment”. Researchers studied Genie for many years. While she did learn to walk and talk, she could never master the subtleties of language, grammar and syntax. This case study shows that socialization, or nurture, are definitely important in the normal development of children.
Thus, focusing primarily on the nurture part of the argument. Socialization is how we learn our culture through interaction with other people. How do we know that social interaction is crucial for our development as humans?
