·Based on the Course Homepage readings—“Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Originals,” “FCC to Investigate Deals Between ISPs and Content Providers” and “13 Things You Need to Know About the FCC’s Net Neutrality” (see “Featured Links” on Course Homepage)—make an educated guess about how subscription-based services and FCC regulation may affect the future state of the film and television industry and the digital delivery of content.

·Discuss Jane Campion’s The Piano(1993, Australia) in terms of Ada’s journey. Examine the character arc (how and why Ada changes) and the initiation archetype. Consider the setting (place and historical period) and the representation of the four men in Ada’s life: her father, Flora’s father, Stewart, Baines.How does choice affect Ada’s journey and what are the metaphorical implications of Ada finding her voice?

·Address how the theoretical framework of Dogme95—the self-imposed limitations—“frees” Thomas Vinterberg as a director and affects The Celebration (1998, Denmark). Also refer to Jørgen Leth andLarsvon Trier’s The Five Obstructions(2003, Denmark).

·Analyze how Alfonso Cuarón’s Y tu mamá también (2001, Mexico) addresses the country’s class issues through voice-over narrator, characters, plot, and cinematic techniques such as the straying camera.

·Discuss how Zhang Yimou’s Hero (2004, China)reflects the issues of post-1997 China. What political and cultural ideology does the film convey to viewers?

·How does Mark Webb’s (500) Days of Summer (2009, USA) qualify as a new narrative? How do the diegetic elements and nonchronological arrangement of events affect your viewing experience and the film’s themes? Cite specific examples.
