INTRODUCTION

Cardiovascular diseases are diseases that are related to the heart and they include stroke, diabetes, cancer, obesity, arthritis and many others. Heart diseases are one of the leading causes of preventable deaths all over the world therefore there is a need to reduce the risk factors that encourage their continual spread. These risk factors for cardiovascular disease include cigarette smoking, high blood pressure, poor nutrition, tobacco use, physical inactivity etc. Some of these risk factors can be controlled while others like older age, family history, post-menopausal, race, and sex cannot be controlled (MaIDox, 2012).

Ways to reduce health risks

There are several ways through which one can reduce the overall risk of developing coronary heart diseases and these include;

  • Taking healthy diet and leading a healthy lifestyle can reduce a person’s risk of heart diseases, heart attacks, and stroke; conditions that lead to heart disease including high cholesterol.(Yih, n.d)
  • Performing physical activities e.g. regular exercise for more than 30 minutes a day.
  • Controlling blood pressure
  • Limiting intake of alcohol
  • Managing a healthy weight
  • Regular check-ups
  • Avoiding stress
  • Having enough rest
  • Avoiding smoking

People who are affected with the various heart diseases experience limitations in function, health, activity and work. These affect the quality of their lives and the lives of their families in general.

One treatment for heart disease includes ACE inhibitors for patients whose heart disease treatment requires a medication that will dilate coronary and other vessels to increase blood flow and lower blood pressure. Others are Beta-blockers. Reducing stress is another technique that can be used to reduce or treat heart diseases. This is the easiest technique that can be used and avoids the harmful side effects of drugs.

The specific techniques that can be used to reduce health risks to cardiovascular diseases include educational techniques, intervention technique e.g. work place intervention, communication techniques and self management and compliance techniques

Conclusion

Cardiovascular diseases have been a major problem to a lot of people around the world. Although some causes of these diseases cannot be prevented, some can by generally living a healthy lifestyle and following the medications that are prescribed by a physician. Health representatives should take it upon themselves to educate the public about these risk factors and how one can live a heart disease free life so as to reduce the number of deaths.
