The Profession of Nursing Informatics

Visit the Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) website and listen to the podcast, Health IT in Action Podcast Episode #1: An Introduction to TIGER (Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform) April 15, 2016 (Duration: 14:55). Go to The Association of Colleges and Research Libraries and review the information literacy standards for higher education. Again, note the relationship between the information literacy skills at this site and on pages 18–66 of the American Nursing Association textbook. Then, answer the following questions:

1. If a healthcare organization is considering hiring a nursing informaticist, one consideration is that such a role does not involve direct patient care. How can this role be justified? Consider your current experience in working with individuals from your nursing informatics department. What types of roles and responsibilities do they perform in your organization? If you do not interact with such a department, utilizing what you have learned so far, what value do you see nursing informatics professionals bringing to your organization?
2. Consider the need to extract data from the electronic health record (EHR) system for quality reporting or clinical research. How can a single agreed-upon model of terminology use (with linkages to a single terminology such as SNOMED CT or LOINC) help to achieve shareable, comparable, and quality data, based on evidence?
