Advanced Levels of Clinical Inquiry and Systematic Reviews

Create a 6- to 7-slide PowerPoint presentation in which you do the following:

  • Identify and briefly describe your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Describe how you developed a PICO(T) question focused on your chosen clinical issue of interest.
  • Identify the four research databases that you used to conduct your search for the peer-reviewed articles you selected.
  • Provide APA citations of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected.
  • Describe the levels of evidence in each of the four peer-reviewed articles you selected, including an explanation of the strengths of using systematic reviews for clinical research. Be specific and provide examples.

Articles selected:

Article # 1

Bernard, M. S., Hunter, K. F., & Moore,K. N.(2012. A review of strategies to decrease the duration of indwelling urethral catheters and potentially reduce the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection. Urologic nursing, 32(1).

Article #2

Fink, R., Gilmartin, H., Richard, A., Capezuti, E., Boltz, M., & Wald, H. (2012). Indwelling urinary catheter management and catheter-associated urinary tract infection prevention practices in Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders hospitals. American journal of infection control, 40(8), 715-720.

Article # 3

Janzen, J., Buurman, B. M., Spanjaard, L., de Reijke, T. M., Goossens, A., & Geerlings, S. E. (2013). Reduction of unnecessary use of indwelling urinary catheters. BMJ Qual Saf, 22(12), 984-988.

Article # 4

Oman, K. S., Makic, M. B. F., Fink, R., Schraeder, N., Hulett, T., Keech, T., & Wald, H. (2012). Nurse-directed interventions to reduce catheter-associated urinary tract infections. American journal of infection control, 40(6), 548-553.

PICO question:

In hospitalized patients, does removing Urinary Catheters less than 48 hours after placement reduces the risk of developing Catheters-Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) compared to having urinary catheters in greater than 72 hours? Formulating clinical questions in a structured, specific way such as PICOT format, assists clinicians to find the right evidence to answer questions to decrease uncertainty (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
